My family and I had just been to church last Sunday and were enjoying a coffee at the local coffee house debating what we should get up to that day.

My daughter wanted to go to the beach, Kaz my wife was not that interested but she suggested that we did a sky dive (it had been on our bucket list to do before my 50^th!).  There was an awkward silence from the girls and then we agreed we would call the skydiving school and see if it was possible.
In a blur we had agreed a time and within 45 minutes after first discussing the possibility we were being briefed on the jump.
We were given a DVD briefing and then our jump instructors got us into our harnesses, as we would be diving in tandem with an instructor.
It seemed too quick! one minute talking a good story the next thing  sitting hunched up on a small aircraft hooked to another human being that I had not met until 30 minutes prior and now I would trust him with my life…I am thinking how did I get into this mess.

   
   
At 9,500 ft we open the door.  The wind is blasting through as I am told to swing my legs around and sit on the ledge…it’s a bit awkward as my long legs get stuck and I half fall through the door! Then I feel a gentle nudge and we are free falling into space, our initial fall wasn’t perfect and we ended up doing a bit of sky aerobics….a summersault and then a couple of adjustments.

   
Freefall is for approximately 30 seconds and after the initial shock I actually enjoy the sensation of falling free.  The exhilarating G force on your body hurtling 200kmh towards the earth was a complete blast.  The 30 second freefall feels like 30 minutes and then I feel the jerk of the shute opening and it feels as if we have been launched vertically, such is the change in velocity.
The instructor allows me to pilot the shute until we were low enough for him to shout to his son who was cleaning the pool in his garden next to the landing base.

We landed with a slide onto our butts with no hiccups, back on terra firma!

Kaz and Jaz joined me a few minutes later.

If the Ayuntamiento had known it would be so popular they may have decided to sell tickets!!

The main focus of the construction now seems to be the beach defences, no surprise that this was the area with the most spectators.  But you only had to look around to see that there was plenty of work going on in other areas.  It seems that there is a real impetus to get the beach ready which is great news for the local community and holiday makers alike.

We still don’t have a projected completion date but if they keep up the current pace of construction then hopefully it won’t be too long before we can all enjoy the new beach.

Firstly the original internal walls were broken down and removed; the ceiling taken down and rebuilt and all the glass mirrors broken (you may remember the photos of Ana-Maria smashing up the old mirrors!).  The concrete floors had to be broken up in readiness for the new floor to be laid.

   
   
In addition a new partition wall has been built, air conditioning plumbing has been installed together with other cables and services required for the new gym.

Completion of the building work will hopefully coincide with the arrival of the new equipment which has been sourced from several countries around the world and is all arriving in mainland Spain before finally being shipped to Pearly Grey on 6th February.

Can you believe TWO Dougie’s diary in less than TWO days!!

If you have visited PG over the last couple of months you would have noticed that a big Yorkshire lad has been helping out with the famous PG champagne welcome. However today we have found a beautiful lady from the Valleys of Wales to fill this very important role.

Sue Moore from the restaurant will be welcoming all our slightly weary travelers coming in from all four corners of Europe from this week onwards.  Sue is very excited as she knows so many of you from working in the restaurant.

Sue has insisted that Champagne must be poured in flutes as opposed to wine glasses, she has laid the table out immaculately and she is raring to go!

So if you are arriving anytime before 5pm make sure you come and join us for a refreshing chilled glass of bubbly!

I have started 2012 by holding a weekly owners meeting. It is not your conventional question & answer style format of old, it has a remarkable twist!!

The twist being, we hold the meeting whilst going on a healthy little walk to the beach! Well past the beach and up to the Barranco (gorge) that separates Callao Salvaje from Playa Paraiso!

We had the first meeting on Monday 9^th January 2012 and it went really well.  We covered all major Pearly Grey issues such as the on going room refurbishments, entertainment, restaurant, Referral programs, the new gym, guest experiences and our vision for the future.  If any issues need more clarification or attention I will make an appointment separately for the coming week.

So if you are planning a trip to Pearly Grey in 2012 bring a decent pair of trainers and join me on a gentle 20 minute stroll to talk about all the positive things that are happening here at thee best resort on the planet!

I have worked at Pearly Grey for 14 years and it feels like a family.  Almost all my colleagues are from Playa San Juan, we have known each other since we were kids.  At Pearly Grey I met the man who is now my husband.  My family means a lot to me and in this company I found one!

TENERIFE Sur Lions Club welcomed Wingate School’s participation again in the Lions International Poster Competition. As I regaled you  in an earlier blog, our in house representative Denise’s daughter participated in a competition which encouraged youngsters to think about peace, and express their feelings creatively, sharing their own unique visions with the world. The task was to create a poster which was evaluated on three criteria Originality, Artistic Merit and Expression of the theme Children know Peace.

Elise’s winning poster was sent to Madrid to be judged on a national level and we are so pleased to announce that Elise also won the national competition.  Her poster has now been sent to the USA where it will represent Spain on the international stage.  The international Grand Prize winner and family receive a holiday during the awards ceremony on Lions Day at the United Nations in New York. The first prize is $2,500 with a further 23 prizes of $500.

Congratulations our little Artistic star your Mum must be so proud of you and so are we…..! We are all routing for you Elise, best of luck

Although it isn’t noticeably different from our November 2011 update there has been plenty of work done.

Progress has been made on the pathways and the lamp posts are now being installed, ensuring that the whole area will be well illuminated and safe for its visitors.

   
   
The sea protection walls have been extended out a little further but there is still some work to be done here before it’s finished.  You will also notice that some of the sand dunes have been levelled out and more sand has been brought in.

   
   
As for a completion date on the project we are still not getting any clear or definitive information from Adeje Ayuntamiento, however it was reassuring to see the amount of activity down there this afternoon.

Hopefully they can maintain the momentum and push through to a completion date not too far off.
