Festivals
For those of you that want to experience something totally different, why not absorb a little of the island’s culture and national colour?
The information below outlines many of bright and bustling festivals that are held at various locations around Tenerife on an annual basis.
February/March
“Carnival”
What better way to let your hair down than at the renowned Tenerife ‘Carnival’?
The island’s biggest bonanza is held in the capital of Santa Cruz and preparations always begin weeks, if not months, in advance, although the real celebrations begin when the “Carnival King & Queen” are elected a week before Ash Wednesday.
Following the ‘elections’ a weekend of partying and revelry commences, the streets adorned with a mass of colour and many decorations.
As the Carnival draws to a close, Shrove Tuesday brings a parade not to be missed, then on Ash Wednesday you can witness “the burial of the sardine”, signifying an end to the spirit of revelry and the crazy world of the carnival – at least for another year!
March/April
“Semana Santa” (Easter Week)
Easter celebrations are held in many towns and villages throughout the island.
May/June
“Corpus Christi”
“Corpus Christi” originated in the 13th Century and is a festival traditionally symbolising the Christian Eucharist that takes place on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday.
During the festivities, in the picturesque town of La Oratava in the north of Tenerife, a beautiful carpet of flowers covers the streets. The amazing ´pictures’ are formed using not only flowers but also natural sand and coloured salt to produce an amazing effect and must be seen to be believed.
As with any Tenerife festival, as well as marvelling at the intricate flower carpets you can join in the fiestas that are filled with music, mirth and merrymaking.
